Our mission

Bike Erie leads efforts to transform our streets and communities into healthy, vibrant and accessible places for safe bicycling and active transportation for everyone.

Our vision

Erie’s future is built on a first-rate healthy transportation network that is safe, accessible and attractive for everyone to use. Our streets, paths and facilities are designed and built to make riding a bike inviting, convenient and enjoyable while connecting everyone to professional, residential, commercial and recreational destinations. We prioritize, value and enjoy healthy transportation because it enriches our culture and lives. We are committed to biking and walking in order to build safer, better neighborhoods and communities for our children and ourselves. Because of our healthy transportation choices and commitments, Erie is a state and national leader of health, happiness and quality of life. Our transformation has helped to create a vibrant Erie County for everyone.

Our approach and what we do

Bike Erie is a leader, facilitator, guide and advocate for efforts and developments that help to make Erie safe, accessible and enjoyable to bike and walk. Bike Erie’s work features multiple interventions and it is greatly influenced by the successful methods of leading bicycle advocacy and education organizations in North America.

  • Encouragement + Fun = We offer and promote events, programs and activities that make biking even more enjoyable for everyone.
  • Education + Support = We help people to develop and access the skills and tools they need to bike and walk safely, confidently and responsibly.
  • Infrastructure + Policy = We advocate for developments that make biking and walking safer, more accessible and less stressful for everyone.

Why we do it

Biking is fun! For many of us, it was our first major form of independence. Biking helps to empower us, to increase our individual happiness, and it enriches our lives and communities. The City of Erie and Erie County are currently among the unhealthiest places in the state. Erie also faces very high poverty and poor self-sufficiency rates. We believe that healthy transportation and recreation like biking can help our communities to reduce these major social problems while improving the quality of life and economic resiliency for everyone in Erie.
